Favored Morningside and Concordia got stiff tests in the final, but both came away with Great Plains Athletic Conference titles in the league’s tournament Tuesday.
Morningside College, ranked 6th in NAIA Division II, made a sweep of regular season and post season titles. The Mustangs came from behind late to win over 11th ranked Northwestern 80-76 in game played at the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center/Allee Gym in Sioux City, Iowa.
Both teams receive an automatic berth to the NAIA Men’s Division II National Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, which runs March 7-13 at the Sanford Pentagon, since the runner-up gains the berth if the regular season champion won the postseason tournament.
The second-ranked women’s team in NAIA Division II made it a sweep of the regular season and the post season as Concordia defeated eighth-ranked Dakota Wesleyan, 90-88.
The Tigers made the most of their trips to the free throw line, going 27-of-28 on the night and shot 52.9 percent from the field.
Both teams receive an automatic berth to the NAIA National Basketball Tournament held March 7-13 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
