More cases of influenza are expected this year after the virus changed just enough so the vaccine may not be as effective as first thought. The Eastern Nebraska Health Department is reporting more confirmed cases. Dr. Mark Rupp is an infectious disease specialist at Nebraska Medicine and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and says one of the best ways to prevent spreading it to others is to stay home and recover.

Rupp says it is too late in the season to develop another vaccine.

Rupp says young children, elderly, those with chronic cardiovascular disease and those with underlying health issues should see their doctor if they get the flu. There are prescription medications that can help.
