The Nebraska Regional Poison Center has seen a 24% increase in calls regarding carbon monoxide from a year ago. Poison Center spokesperson Joan McVoy says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranks Nebraska high on their list of states where carbon monoxide is a concern.

McVoy says people often confuse carbon monoxide poisoning as the flu symptoms are very similar.

McVoy says the best preventative measures include inspecting fuel burning equipment yearly, vent fuel burning heaters to the outside, do not use a gas range or oven for heating a room and install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home.
