South Dakota sophomore guard Matt Mooney was named Summit League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ended Feb. 26.
Mooney is the third Coyote to earn the award this season, joining Trey Burch-Manning and Tyler Flack.
Mooney averaged 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in leading the Coyotes to a pair of road wins to capture The Summit League title outright for South Dakota’s first championship. He scored a game-high 27 points, pulled down eight rebounds and had two assists in Saturday’s clinching win at IUPUI. He totaled 16 points, four boards and one assist in Thursday’s win against Western Illinois.
Mooney finished Summit League play as the conference’s third-leading scorer at 21.1 points per game. He shot 48 percent from the field, and averaged five rebounds, 2.6 steals and 2.1 assists per game.
The Coyotes (21-10, 12-4 Summit), winners of six in a row, take on Western Illinois at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls in the first round of the Summit League Tournament.
