Last week, the Food and Drug Administration held a hearing looking at cultured or ‘’fake meat”. Testifying was United States Cattlemen’s Association Board member and Montana rancher Maggie Nutter. She says cultured meat companies are stealing producers brand if they’re allowed to label their product as meat.
She says cultured or fake meat companies need to create their own terminology, checkoff and brand.
Nutter says the FDA and USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service are currently at odds over which agency should regulate fake meat. She says both agencies have their positives and negatives.
Nutter says she’s concerned that cultured meat advocates are also calling for eliminating the slaughtering of animals.
Both the National Pork Producers Council and North American Meat Institute want the USDA to assert its proper oversight on laboratory produced cultured protein and gene editing in livestock production.
