The National Farmers Union’s Board of Directors has been meeting in Des Moines, Iowa this week. The Board approved a resolution opposing mega mergers, such as the one attempted by Monsanto and Syngenta. Although Syngenta rejected this second takeover bid, NFU Board member and Nebraska State Farmers Union President, John Hansen says they’re clear about opposing these types of mergers.
Hansen says this consolidation could have created concentration problems for agriculture.
He says past mega mergers have led to full control of the markets and technology by the large companies created by those mergers.
Had Syngenta accepted Monsanto’s latest $ 45 billion offer, and been approved by regulators, it would have created the world’s biggest agricultural company.
