Despite having significant snowfalls, many regions of the Midwest are still suffering from dry conditions and still are in need of additional moisture. Dennis Todey, USDA climatologist based in Ames, Iowa says most regions within the western corn belt still suffer from drought conditions. Todey says in many areas subsoil moisture levels are as much at ten inches below normal moisture averages. Todey says spring is when it rains and soil moisture levels are then re-charged. He doesn’t believe farmers will have any delayed planting this coming spring.
