A company that’s developed mobile driver’s license software is running a test of its product with Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) employees. Morpho Trust U-S-A says Iowa is the first state in the country to use its mobile driver’s license. The Iowa D-O-T started developing the application last year, and spokesperson Andrea Henry says the digital licenses are a lot like the regular ones, but have additional features.
The application is now only compatible with newer iPhones, but the company hopes to expand its use to other models. You might feel uncomfortable handing over your smartphone to a police officer or to a store clerk to have your age checked to buy alcohol, but Henry says that shouldn’t be an issue.
Morpho Trust says it the Iowa D-O-T employees will assess and validate the system in situations where physical licenses are typically presented. The pilot will also test record updates sent to the phone for things like a change of address, organ donor status and change in driving status, endorsements, or restrictions. Henry says the mobile system could become available to all Iowans in 12-to-18 months after the 90-day testing period is completed.
