MNFU President Reacts to CA Senators Asking for More Trade Aid

California Democratic Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris are asking Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue to give extra compensation to farmers who’ve been hurt by the trade war. They cite a USDA study that estimates 2018 farm income will drop by $9.8 billion from 2017 income levels. Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says extra trade aide isn’t the solution, what’s needed is an end to the tariffs and trade war.

He says the government can’t supply the entire amount of aid that’s needed to reimburse farmers from the damage they’ve suffered from the trade war.

Wertish says the request for the extra aid is nothing more than political posturing.

Wertish says there have been many statements by the government about solving the trade dispute but not much follow through.
