United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says he plans to ask for a three-year extension of Trade Promotion Authority or TPA. Minnesota Farm Bureau President Kevin Paap says that would be beneficial for agriculture and help ensure needed trade deals move forward.
Lighthizer says he wants the three-year extension so they can work on new trade pacts with Japan and Vietnam and other Pacific Rim countries. Paap says trade is more important to agriculture than ever before.
Paap says 17 Minnesota Farm Bureau members will take the message of the importance of TPA while they’re in Washington D.C. this week speaking with federal lawmakers.
Trade Promotion Authority allows the President to negotiate trade agreements and receive approval with just an up or down vote of Congress.
