Minnesota’s poultry producers and state agencies are both better prepared to deal with highly pathogenic avian influenza should it resurface this year. Dr. Dale Lauer with the Minnesota Board of Animal Health says they learned a lot from last year’s outbreak, especially how to deal with the migratory birds that carry the disease.
Lauer, who serves as supervisor for Minnesota’s Poultry Testing Laboratory in Willmar, says state agencies will also be better equipped to respond to a bird flu outbreak.
He says disease detection has also been ramped up by producers and animal health officials.
Lauer says all of Minnesota’s state agencies did a good job of responding to the avian influenza outbreak last year, as result of good coordination and communication. He says those efforts are continuing.
