University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine researchers have developed a swine herd surveillance test that has the ability to test the immunity of pigs to porcine epidemic diarrhea virus.  Professor Michael Murtaugh says the test they developed identifies antibodies pigs make in response to PED virus infection.

Murtaugh says the presence of antibodies is associated with immunity.

He says although there’s no cure they’re working to try and find ways to help pigs develop immunity to the virus.

Murtaugh says they’re looking at ways to induce pigs so they can develop high levels of immunity along with low levels of the disease.
