United States and Chinese trade officials are in talks to re-open China’s market to U.S. poultry exports including chickens, turkeys and eggs. Minnesota Turkey and Chicken Grower’s Association Executive Director Steve Olson says the fact they’re talking is positive as China is an important market for Minnesota and U.S. poultry.
He says export markets are very important for Minnesota’s poultry producers.
Olson says their top market is Mexico but China is number two.
If the trade discussions with China are successful, Sanderson Farms, Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation and Tyson Foods could begin regaining some of the business in China was lost when the ban was implemented in 2015 over Avian Influenza concerns.
