The Minnesota Turkey Grower’s Association has some concerns with USDA’S finalized GIPSA rules known as the Farmer Fair Practice Rules. Executive Director Steve Olson says it mostly centers around the unintended consequences of the rules and the cost to the industry.
He says Minnesota turkey growers don’t have the problems with contract production and dealing with GIPSA rules that producers in other part of the country do. However, they’re worried about the government rules creating contract complications.
Olson says they are also opposed to another bureaucratic layer of rules being forced onto the turkey industry.
Olson says they’ll take a closer look at the USDA rules and will decide whether or not to weigh in during the 60-day public comment period.
