Gov. Mark Dayton says landing college football’s championship game would be the “frosting on the cake” for Minnesota’s still-incomplete stadium going up in downtown Minneapolis.
With Gophers football coach Jerry Kill and others at his side Tuesday, Dayton helped announce the bid for the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship. The cities Minneapolis is competing against still aren’t apparent, but a decision on the game’s venue is expected in October.
To date, the January game has only been awarded to warm-weather cities.
The $1 billion Vikings stadium has already been chosen for the 2018 Super Bowl and then the 2019 Final Four.
Organizers of the bid say they’ll approach lawmakers later about tax exemptions for game and event tickets, but they won’t make the request this year.
