Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has requested a disaster declaration from U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue for twelve northwest counties, due to spring flooding and continued excessive moisture. State Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen says additional western Minnesota counties are also included in that request.
He expects a quick response to their disaster declaration request.
Petersen says it’s been a very challenging year, but at least most of the soybean crop has been harvested. The biggest concern now is getting enough propane to dry the corn down.
Governor Walz noted in his letter to Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue that Minnesota has over 68,000 farming operations and ranks fifth nationally in agricultural production.
