The legislature has given all Minnesota school districts permission this year only to start classes before Labor Day because the holiday falls so late — and a new survey shows about a third will do it. Gary Lee with the Minnesota School Boards Association says districts for years have been trying to convince lawmakers to allow early starts *every* year:
Those opposed argue that if school starts before Labor Day, attendance will drop at the State Fair and fewer people will take their families to resorts for the long Labor Day weekend.
