An outbreak of high pathogenic avian influenza in a flock in Tennessee has poultry producers in Minnesota on alert. Monday, the flock of more than 73,00 chickens was depopulated and will not enter the food system. Minnesota Turkey Growers and Chicken and Egg Association Executive Director Steve Olson says he’s not surprised the bird flu resurfaced, although the Tennessee incident involves a different strain than the one they dealt with in 2015.

He says they’ve continued to prepare for a possible bird flu incident by heightening their own biosecurity in Minnesota.

Olson says USDA officials took the proper steps in responding to the bird flu outbreak in Tennessee.

Birds on 30 other farms within a six-mile radius of the infected farm in Tennessee are also being quarantined.
