Minnesota Pork President Encouraged By Trade Talks With Japan

The U.S. and Japan could continue trade talks this week with a Ministerial meeting possibly scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday this week. That’s following positive discussions last week in the U.S. Minnesota Pork Producers Association President Greg Boerboom says Japan is the biggest export market for U.S. pork value wise and number two volume wise behind Mexico.

He says without a trade deal with Japan, U.S. pork producers are losing market share to both the European Union and Canada., as the E.U. has their own free trade deal with Japan while Canada is in the Comprehensive Trans Pacific Partnership with Japan.

Boerboom says his group continues to weigh in with their Congressional Delegation on the importance of forging these bilateral trade deals, especially with Japan.

Boerboom says the U.S. pork industry depends on solid export markets as 25 percent of our pork products go overseas.
