Minnesota Planting Delays Leave Farmers with Tough Decisions

Minnesota Planting Delays Leave Farmers with Tough Decisions

Although the latest USDA weekly crop progress report shows Minnesota farmers now have 60 percent of the state’s corn crop planted, farmers are running out of time.  Full crop insurance coverage will begin to be reduced starting tomorrow.  Jeff Coulter, a University of Minnesota Extension Agronomist says studies show that corn yields begin to drop with corn planted after May 25th.  Coulter says farmers may want to look at planting earlier season hybrid varieties.

Coulter says the delay in planting schedule depends on your location within Minnesota.

The University of Minnesota agronomist admits there is potential for some yield reduction with corn planted this late, but he still encourages farmers to continue to plant corn.
