Dairy producers have until December 13 to enroll in the 2020 version of the Dairy Margin Coverage Insurance program. The 2019 enrollment period just ended recently and saw just under 81 percent of dairy farms signed up. Minnesota Milk Producers Association President Dave Buck says those who took five year coverage in 2019 are already in the program but those who took one year have till December to choose whether or not to sign up.

Any dairy farmer who wants 2020 coverage must visit their local USDA Service Center office and pay the yearly administrative fee, which is $100 for the lowest level of catastrophic coverage. Buck says DMC offers a good safety net for smaller dairy producers.

Buck says with all the weather challenges this year and harvest so far behind, it’s positive that dairy farmers have some time to consider whether or not they want to sign up by the December 13 deadline.

He says Minnesota’s dairy farmers had the advantage during the 2019 sign up to also get funding through a state program that gave them an incentive to enroll in the national DMC program.
