The Premier of Quebec, Canada’s largest dairy province said his country should reconsider its dairy policy to help ease tensions with the United States. He says the class 7 milk pricing policy was put in place to hurt the competitiveness of U.S. dairy products., and that that could be addressed in the NAFTA talks rather than Canada’s dairy supply management program. Minnesota Milk Producers Executive Director Lucas Sjostrom says that’s a positive development.
He says one of the major concerns for Minnesota’s dairy producers is that President Trump has indicated there may be no resolution in the NAFTA discussions until after the U.S.election. Sjostrom says dairy producers need help now that a successful NAFTA remake could bring.
Sjostrom is encouraging his group’s members to weigh in with their Congressmen and Women and ask for a resolution to both NAFTA and the trade war.
Quebec’s Premier says if milk pricing is the main issue in the NAFTA discussions, then negotiators need to see how that can be approached and kept separate from supply management.
