United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said earlier that he thinks they can complete the remake of the North American Free Trade Agreement sometime this month. Minnesota Milk Producers Association Executive Director Lucas Sjostrom while encouraged by that says there are still some sticking points including the dispute with Canada over their supply management program.
He says getting some deal with Mexico is paramount although being engaged in the tri-lateral NAFTA agreement is also important.
Sjostrom says the other NAFTA sticking point, the sunset provision isn’t workable and doesn’t fit into reaching any lasting trade agreement.
The NAFTA discussions are continuing this week in Washington, D.C.
