Minnesota Milk Executive Hopes Congress Focuses On Positive Immigration Legislation

One Milk Association official is hoping Congress moves forward with positive immigration reform to help address agricultural worker needs. That despite recent calls for tough immigration policy following the murder of an Iowa University Student this week. Minnesota Milk Producers Association Executive Director Lucas Sjostrom says he hopes lawmakers focus on the need for positive immigration reform.

He’s hoping once Congress gets back from recess they’ll have some time to talk about immigration. Sjostrom says their best chance for moving legislation may be in the lame duck session following the elections.

Sjostrom says dairy industry representatives will keep pushing for immigration reform despite recent failure in the House.

Sjostrom says agriculture isn’t the only industry where there’s a worker shortage. He says an economic development official he talked to recently said that in the 30 states he works with, they’re all looking for workers.
