Minnesota Milk Executive Encouraged By FDA’s Support Of Milk Identity

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said this week he’ll crack down on the use of the term milk for non dairy products. Minnesota Milk Producers Association Executive Director Lucas Sjostrum is encouraged by those comments and is hoping the agency will move forward to ensure that only milk produced from dairy cows can be labeled as milk.

He’s also encouraged that Gottlieb also said this week that the FDA will soon issue a guidance document outlining changes to its so called standards of identity policies for marketing milk.

Sjostrom is hoping dairy processors will see proper milk identification as a marketing opportunity.

Sjostrom sees Gottlieb’s comments as a follow through from when dairy producers from Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska met with him last spring during consideration of the Dairy Pride Act legislation.
