Minnesota state lawmakers were unable to come to an agreement on passing a transportation bill this session. While that was disappointing for farm groups, State Farmers Union Government Relations Director Thom Petersen says a resolution is still possible and a special session could be called to deal with transportation.
He thinks Governor Dayton may ask legislators to return to address those infrastructure needs.
Petersen says they’re hoping the legislature will find some solutions to address the infrastructure problems, especially in the southwest part of the state.
Both the Minnesota House and Senate agree $600 million in new spending is needed for the next ten years to address road and bridge issues. However, they remain at odds over how to pay for it. Democrats want a gas tax increase, while Republicans want to use current revenue streams.
