Several farm group leaders are pleased President Trump last week signed the 2018 farm bill into law. Minnesota Land Stewardship Project members say the measure preserved the Conservation Stewardship program and protected conservation overall. LSP Policy Program Organizer Ben Anderson says that is the best part of the legislation along with aid for beginning farmers and ranchers.

He says overall however the farm bill failed to correct policy that needed changing in order to help farmers and ranchers deal with the depressed ag economy.

Anderson says before Congress writes the next farm bill they’ll likely have to come back and make corrections to the 2018 measure.

Anderson says the farm bill should have included provisions to close farm program payment loopholes.
