Senate Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts who’s chairing the Conference Committee working on the farm bill said this week a farm bill by the September 30 deadline isn’t likely. That’s concerning for Minnesota Land Stewardship Project members. Federal Policy Organizer Ben Anderson says it’s disappointing they haven’t come together to get a farm bill passed.
He says without a completion of a full farm bill, many needed programs will lose most if not all of their funding and go away.
Anderson says it’s possible an extended farm bill could be approved which could help if they keep program funding in that measure and pass it quickly.
The major holdup on the farm bill continues to be House members wanting work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program in the bill. Anderson says those are really unnecessary and don’t help those people access the food farmers grow.
