Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton is on a trade mission in Mexico this week. Traveling with the delegation is Ag Commissioner Dave Frederickson. He says their trip is two-fold. One is to open new markets, and the other is to preserve existing trade. Mexico is the number one export market for U.S. turkey, and Frederickson says they remained that way even during the avian influenza outbreak.
Frederickson says they want to make sure that as flocks repopulate, Mexico will continue to be a reliable customer.
He says if and when a bird flu vaccine becomes available for turkeys, they want to make sure Mexico will work with them to take product from Minnesota.
