Tuesday’s Senate passage of the farm bill coupled with earlier approval by the House means it’s now on its way to President Obama for his signature. The largest part of the legislation is the supplemental nutrition assistance program or SNAP. Minnesota Farmers Union President Doug Peterson says the $ 8 billion cut in that program along with the streamlining components will help get food to those who need it the most.
Peterson says the best part of the farm bill for producers is the certainty it provides and the help it gives in the form of disaster payments and a strong safety net.
He says he expects the President to sign the bill mainly because of the compromise over the nutrition program.
