Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts hopes to begin work on the new farm bill next month. Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish is concerned with the late movement on the needed legislation.
He says if the crafting of the farm legislation gets pushed into the summer it may be too late to get it completed before the current farm bill expires.
Wertish says the farm program must have a robust safety net, along with increased funding.
Wertish says the new farm legislation must also provide assistance for dairy farmers who have faced several years of low prices.
