Minnesota farm group leaders are pleased with Governor Mark Dayton’s appointment of Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith to the Senate. Smith will fill the seat vacated by Senator Al Franken.
Minnesota Farm Bureau President Kevin Paap says they’re excited because Smith really understands the needs of agriculture in the state.
Paap says they’ve worked with Smith on several agriculture issues in Minnesota while she was the Lieutenant Governor and they have a great relationship with her.
Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says they’re also pleased with the Governor’s selection as her policy priorities line up well with his group.
Wertish says Smith has expressed interest in working on the ag committee and helping with the writing of the farm bill. However, it’s up to the leadership which committees she’ll be seated on.
