Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden of Oregon led a group of Democratic Senators introducing legislation to end the trade embargo on Cuba. The measure called the US Cuba Trade Act of 2021 calls for repealing sanctions on Cuba and establish normal trade relations with the island nation. Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish supports the effort. He says Northern Plains Producers will benefit by trading with Cuba.
He says the trade sanctions on Cuba haven’t worked and its’ long past time to remove those.
Wertish says it will take bi-partisan support to get Wyden’s bill passed.
The US Cuba Trade Act of 2021 would repeal the major statutes that codify sanctions against Cuba, including the Helms Burton Act and the Cuban Democracy Act. It also would establish normal trade relations with the country.
