Soil compaction can be a problem during harvest. Because of that the University of Minnesota Extension has come out with some management suggestions for producers to consider. Extension Educator Jodie DeJong-Hughes says checking the tire PSIs is important.
She says if a producer can, they should stay off of wet soils, but sometimes they have to harvest when they can. DeJong-Hughes says they researched fields that had a lot of ruts and found some significant yield loss in the corn.
DeJong-Hughes says besides checking the PSI, farmers should unload their grain carts frequently and check the axle loads.
DeJong-Hughes says you can go to the University of Minnesota Extension website and check out any of the four videos they have on dealing with soil compaction.
