Minnesota Bill Would Place Four-Year Moratorium on Larger Dairies

Minnesota Bill Would Place Four-Year Moratorium on Larger Dairies

Legislation was introduced last week in the Minnesota House to place a four-year moratorium on the expansion or construction of dairy operations of 1,000 animal units and higher. Minnesota Milk Producers Association Executive Director Lucas Sjostrom says this action has been unsuccessful in the past, so he doesn’t think it will gain any traction.

He says those backing the moratorium have the support of three House members. However, his group and other ag advocates are talking to them and other lawmakers about the need to kill this measure.

Sjostrom says most dairy producers are more concerned about the coronavirus and its impacts, than with this moratorium legislation.

Sjostrom says another reason the moratorium bill isn’t likely to move is there’s no companion measure in the Senate.
