The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved label amendments that further restrict the use of over-the-top dicamba in Minnesota and Iowa. The amendments, requested by pesticide registrants in consultation with those states, are intended to reduce risks from the use of over-the-top dicamba.

Minnesota Dicamba Task Force Chair Bob Worth says this season farmers south of I-94 can’t spray after June 12, and north of that line the cutoff remains June 30.  There is also a temperature cutoff.

He says these restrictions are intended to reduce the likelihood of volatility and offsite movement of over-the-top dicamba. They are based on analysis of 2021 complaints.

Worth says without the changes farmers were in jeopardy of losing the herbicide all together after a high number of alleged drift complaints in 2021.

In Iowa the revised label prohibits over-the-top dicamba application on dicamba-tolerant crops after June 20.

The affected dicamba formulations are Engenia, Tavium and XtendiMax.
