Millions in Unclaimed Dollars

About 280 million dollars of unclaimed money is sitting in the office of the South Dakota State Treasurer, waiting for someone to come and claim it. In just the past fiscal year, over 69 million dollars was taken in, and only 16 million of that has been returned to the people it belongs to.
State Treasurer, Rich Sattgast, says unclaimed property typically comes to his office from large financial institutions….

Sattgast says these dollars can also come from life insurance policies and prepaid cards that have gone dormant. He says South Dakotans can call the office or search online to find money that may belong to them……

Sattgast says some of the unclaimed money has been lost for quite a while……

He says that 280 million dollars will be held, and does not revert back to the state. To find out if you have money waiting to be claimed, visit SD treasurer dot gov or call the office.
