Dairy producers have witnessed the price for whole milk drop nearly six dollars per hundred weight from last year’s high. Many factors , such as quality, percent of butterfat, and percentage of protein are figured to determine the price paid to dairy farmers. Marv Post is the president of the South Dakota Dairy Producers Association, and a dairy producer near Volga.
Post says under the terms of the last farm bill, there is a price support system to help dairy producers with 200 cows or less to keep up their milk support margins.
Post says the price for whole milk to the dairy producer has gone from $23 per hundred weight to now a price that is around $18 per hundred weight.
