The National Milk Producer’s Federation and National Association of Clean Water Agencies signed a memorandum of understanding this week to improve watershed levels and make water quality improvements. Federation’s Government Relations Director Ryan Bennett says dairy farmers fit well with the goals of NACWA as it relates to improving water quality.
Bennett says the dairy industry uses everything to achieve higher water quality by using anaerobic digesters, nutrient separation technologies and land management practices like planting grass buffers by streams as well as using no till on fields.
He says all of this should help improve U.S. dairy’s carbon footprint which is already the best in the world according to the United Nations.
Bennett notes the recent MOU marks a milestone in efforts to strengthen the relationship between rural and urban sectors on water quality, conservation efforts and the environment.
