Milk Executive Hoping Newly Elected Officials Will Spur Immigration Reform

One of the issues President Elect Joe Biden has promised to address is immigration reform. That’s a major issue for the dairy industry and an attempt at a comprehensive bill was tried last year but failed. Minnesota Milk Producer’s Association’s Executive Director Lucas Sjostrom says Minnesota’s two Senators back immigration reform so he’s hoping that’ll carry through this time around.

He says the tough spot to get immigration over the finish line will be the Senate where it’s easy for legislation to get bogged down.

Sjostrom says the other thing that complicates the immigration debate is that dairy needs year round labor so that puts a whole new perspective on any legislation that can make passage challenging.

Sjostrom says his group is watching to see what happens in the Senate race in Georgia and how that impacts control of the Senate to get a better idea where immigration could be headed in 2021.
