Milk Being Dumped Due to U.S. Surplus

The surplus of milk in the United States has reached a level processors are having trouble keeping up and some dairies have resorted to dumping their milk. National Milk Producer Federation’s Chris Galen says the problem started this spring and has been most prominent east of the Mississippi River.

Galen says trying to export the extra product would seem to be the solution. However currently world production is also quite high.

So he says the supply and demand imbalance needs to be corrected before this problem can be addressed.

Galen says while a successful TPP deal might help increase dairy exports to southeast Asian countries, it will also allow more milk to come into the U.S. from Canada. That will increase the need for even more exports to deal with the supply and demand imbalance.
