The European Commission this week adopted a package of ambitious climate proposals. They’re looking at reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says the U.S. is also moving toward battling climate change and agriculture has a role to play in that.

Will the adoption by the E.U.. push the U.S. toward more climate change, Wertish says the U.S. Congress has already weighed in and people are taking the need to improve the environmental footprint more seriously than in the past.

Wertish says biofuels have a positive effect on the environment and they are reducing greenhouse gas emissions already so moving development of higher blends of those forward is helpful.

The European’s climate plan also calls for setting an increased target to produce 40 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2030.
