The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced producers will be getting additional prevented planting assistance as authorized by the Disaster Relief Act of 2019. The Ag Department says producers with Crop Insurance who have Yield Protection and Revenue Protection with Harvest Price Exclusion will get a 10 percent top up payment. Producers with Revenue Protection will receive 15 percent. Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says that help is needed and appreciated by farmers.

He says producers have been hurt by adverse weather, the trade war with China and small refiner waivers granted by the EPA that has depressed their economy and left them with lower prices.

Wertish says producers are dealing with oversupply and the need to sell their product on the domestic market as well as globally.

House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson said this additional prevented planting aid will provide direct help to farmers without additional paperwork and let them focus on the several challenges they’re dealing with.
