Mexico has opened its market to imports of US. Bison meat. That’s following two years of serious negotiations. National Bison Association Executive Director Dave Carter says they’re pleased to see that market opening as this will be the first time U.S. bison meat will be heading to Mexico.
He says the Mexican market is a very important one for U.S. bison ranchers.
Carter says the ground work was set earlier when U.S.. bison marketers visited Mexico and began establishing relationships with buyers.
Carter says other markets U.S. bison producers are hoping to gain access to include Korea, Japan and Taiwan as well as the European Union. He says some U.S. beef that’s been verified as hormone free is allowed in the E.U. Carter says it’s illegal to use hormones in bison but because the E.U. agreement with the U.S involves only beef, bison is left out., so that needs to be corrected.
