Uzbekistan has reopened to U.S. pork lifting an import suspension imposed in response to findings of PED virus. U.S. Meat Export Federation regional representative Yuri Barutkin says the PEDV outbreak occurred three years ago in the U.S. leading to the ban. He says MEF working with USDA and industry officials brought Uzbekistan officials to the U.S. to learn about the disease and how the U.S. pork industry is handling it.
He says following their meetings with Uzbekistan officials the restriction was lifted.
Barutkin says while Uzbekistan isn’t now a big customer of U.S. pork, there is a potential for future growth of that market.
Barutkin says the U.S. is in a good position to compete for that market.
