September and year to date pork and beef exports are up in both volume and value verses year ago levels. U.S. Meat Export Federation President Dan Halstrom says pork exports through the first three quarters of the year were up 8-percent by volume and 10-percent by value. Meanwhile, beef exports for September were up 2-percent by volume verses last year and so far in 2017 are up 16-percent by value.
He says an improving world economy is helping to drive exports, as well as expanding demand for beef and pork among international consumers.
Halstrom says U.S. meat exports are also being promoted by packing companies, food service and fast food outlets.
Pork exports were bolstered by increased sales to South Korea, Taiwan, Canada, Central and South America. Beef exports were up to all regions, except the hurricane-struck Caribbean region.
