Preserving full market access and the gains made in the original North American Free Trade Agreement are the priorities for the U.S. Meat Export Federation as the NAFTA talks begin. MEF President and CEO Phil Seng says there’s quite a bit of U.S. red meat going to both Canada and Mexico from the United States.

He says the original NAFTA has been beneficial for all three countries that’s resulted in excellent three way agricultural trade.

Seng says there are some sticky issues that have to be worked out before a renegotiated NAFTA can be completed. He says for agriculture that centers around dairy.

Seng says there is a possibility that some of the modernizing of NAFTA could improve labor and include E-Commerce which wasn’t around when the original deal was worked out.
