Meat Export Federation Pleased Beef Grading Concerns Addressed With Mexico

United States Meat Export Federation concerns with Mexico and their beef grading standards have been resolved and now the U.S. can differentiate its product from Mexico while both nations can have their own grading standards. Joe Schuele with MEF says the whole issue began three years ago but now has been settled.

Prior to this recent resolution, there was confusion for consumers with how English grade names could be used interchangeably with Spanish names. Schuele says the U.S. remains the top beef exporter to Mexico and having this cleared up prevents any future trade problems.

He says the new grading standard rules won’t go into effect right away but should in the near future.

Schuele says keeping U.S. product differentiated from Mexican product is beneficial for both countries in the long run.
