Absolute rates of biopsy and post-biopsy complications have decreased following benchmark publications on PSA screening, but according to a new study by Mayo Clinic researchers, the relative risk for patients continues to increase.
Dr. Boris Gershman is an Urology Specialist with Mayo Clinic, and was a co-author of this study

Approximately 17 percent of biopsies resulted in complications, the most common included infections, bleeding and urinary retention. Gershman says one of the ways to combat the number of complications is patient selection

Gershman says there are also looking at different procedural changes to help lower the numbers of those who experience complications post-biopsy

There has been little research done on biopsy complications to this point. Gerhsman says this was a good step forward in minimizes the effects.
