Congress is considering a budget draft proposal that would cap Commodity Credit Corporation funding and could put the Market Facilitation Program payments in jeopardy. Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says that’s a slap in the face for America’s farmers.
He says agriculture has borne the brunt of President Trump’s dispute with China and while the Market Facilitation Payments have provided some relief, putting and end to the trade war is needed.
Wertish says if tariffs placed on China by the U.S. continue, the negative impacts hit farmers and consumers.
The trade aid is one of several unresolved issues Congress will have to work through to meet a budget deadline by the end of this month.
